Ok,, I feel lucky enough to have in hand an 82 special engine, an 1970 xs1 engine complete but apart, and a completely stock 72-73 which is in my bike right now. As many on here, I'm on a budget, I want to rephase one of these engines. I have a big bore kit for my xs1,," found it while picking parts off of a local" and yes it has the 22mm wrist pins but are stock yamaha pistons. So my question is If you had to choose one engine which one would you do knowing your selling the rest of everything to pay for it. I already have a PMA and a pamco ignition but would have to change that for the rephase. Thank you,,Jason

Well, to me it would be a no-brainer. The early 256 engines wear their rods out faster, even stock. Parts are harder to find for them and more expensive when you do. Sell the '73 and older stuff, keep the '82.
