Intro and 1980 XS Build. Brown Bomber.

Dang! That looks good maas562. Good quality build you've got going.
Be careful with those exhaust tips, you could cut your leg clean off.

Looking good....one might wonder what would happen if your carbs ever leaked tho ha. Just to throw it out there. I've heard of exhaust so close to the carbs that it boils the gas in them....idk ha

I like it though

Thanks guys.

Maas, how did you polish the edges of the cooling fins? I want to do that but I am afraid...

You do that while you paint it. Sand the edges of the fins before you paint, by hand or with some sort of flapper on a die grinder. Get them nice and polished the way you want them. Then when you paint the head and cylinders, take a rag and dip it in acetone or something similar and take your finger and wipe/clean off the edges. It's easiest to do them while they're wet.
Another way is to paint them, let them dry, and then sand off the paint. However, I chose the first method I described.

Rick at Oldskoolcarbs is rebuilding my carbs so I'm banking on them not leaking, lol

That thought has crossed my mind about getting the fuel too hot. Which is why the pipes will be ceramic coated. Depending on how the pipes feel on break in, I might also wrap just the portion under the carbs to keep the heat down.

Here are the pipes after some fluff and buff. They should be ready for ceramic coating now. No idea on the color, can go with a chromex (basically chrome look but it's ceramic) and pretty much any other color you want. Any suggestions?
Frame is going to be cream and the tins are going to be mainly brown to match the seat with cream accents

Got the pipes back on the bike and had to post these up.

I'm in love with these pipes. Probably my favorite set I've seen on a 650 to date. Mostly cause I built them but also because they just look awesome.

Enjoy.

Got started on my fake oil tank. I wasn't going to run one, but it'll help clean up the wiring.

It has a cover that will bolt on too.

Where it might go, the pma reg will hang off the bottom out and catch fresh air from under the bike.

Thanks Johnt. I didn't like the way the brake stay turned out at first. I thought it was too big and heavy duty looking. It's grown on me now and i like it lol. I believe they were 1/2" turnbuckles from mc master. 3/8 would probably be fine if you want it a little more sleeker.

Oh it'll get hot, but I'm used to it.

My buell absolutely cooks my right leg in traffic, have to actually sick it out sometimes once you get moving to cool it down.

The good part is Appleton isn't that big (like 72,000) and the traffic is never too bad. Plus i hate riding in the city anyways. So I'm not usually sitting at a stop that often.

NICE WORK !!!!

Only thing I can recommend would to move the pitcock bung, looks like might be loosing 1/8 a tank of gas. Other than that AWSOME work really admire your skills.

Thanks.

I don't know why the bung is so far forward. It probably would be be fine if the tank was more flat. There's two bungs further back on each side for a cross over. I was thinking of running two petcocks off those into one line.

I spent two full days working on the bike this weekend, the average person would never be able to tell a difference. I've been told i spend too much time on details nobody ever sees.

So i was originally running gsxr clamps. They had a Suzuki logo on them that i didn't like. So i switched to r1 clamps but the stem was too short to get the bearing retaining nuts on. So i pressed the gsxr stem into the r1 clamps. The top of the gsxr stem didn't quite fit the r1 clamp so i got to work to fix that.

Here is the r1 stem and r1 clamp. Prefect fit. Notice that Yamaha logo that i was after :)

Here is the gsxr stem. Notice the gap, hard to see.

I also wasn't happy with the tank mounts. So i made bungs to redo them.

I also moved the tank back about an inch to increase my turning radius. Though it would look cool i didn't want to dish out the tank to clear the bars.

Also, some exhaust clamps. They will go around the carb/rear down tube area and have a bracket welded to them to secure the pipes to the frame. That way they're nice and sturdy as this thing shakes down the road.

photobucket-1514-1360728434973_zpsd71585d2.jpg

Last, a tail light mount. Not happy with this design so it will be scrapped. I'm going to ditch the gore design and go for a straight tube or smooth radius. I'll give both a try and see what looks best. Stay tuned.

I'm running a Nash sticky 1" internal throttle. The clip ons are only 7/8" , so i got to work to fix that. I turned them down to 3/4" so about 3" could fit inside 1x.120 alum tube. That way they would have a little more strength versus just a butt weld.
