Kick Starter

Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question but today was the first time I have started and rode my xs. When I pull the clutch lever in this disengages the kick start.
Is this normal? And if so is this to aid the electric start?

That is normal. I use this 'feature' to kick loose some sticky clutch plates before I start the engine when the bike stood for a while. Saves you a loud bang when you engage first gear when the engine is cold. It wasn't made to aid the electric start, at least not that I know of.
