Late engine into early type frame ?

I believe that the front engine mounting was changed in some way following the 1973/4 redesign.
So a late engine will not simply just bolt up.
Can it be fitted with a bit of simple jiggery-pokery (like making new front mount plates) ?
Or will the crankcase need machining ?

Only the front mount is affected.
All engine mounts points from 1972-1983 are the same. The front engine mount point is different on 70-71 casings.

@Rhy650 and his Dad put a late model electric start engine in a '71 frame. It's in this years calendar. Maybe he'll chime in here.

That's right. I believe it is an '82 engine in the '71 frame. Dad actually completed this part before I took on the project. I'll try and take a look at it and compare with my other bike to see how Dad modified it.

Something else you are going to have to contend with (if you want an electric start) is the smaller battery bay of the early models. I had to use some new-fangled lithium battery to fit in the space and get enough amps to the starter.

Any 1972-1983 engine will go into any 1970-1973 frame as long as you use 1972-1973 front engine stays.
