New member here. Just checking in to say "howdy". Picked up an '83 XS650 a few weeks ago. They PO clearly stated it wasn't running...and was he ever right. He claimed that it needed the valves adjusted and that he was running it earlier in the spring/summer. After getting into this bike I seriously doubt it was running earlier this year. I currently have it torn apart and I'm waiting for the last of my parts to arrive tomorrow and Thursday. Here is what I've done and am doing:
1. Adjusted intake and exhaust valves (several times as finding TDC was tough until I found the timing mark on the generator).
2. Adjusted cam tensioner
3. Rebuilt master cylinder
4. Replaced main sprocket seal
5. Replaced clutch push shaft seal
6. Replace starter bendix
7. Upgraded clutch needle bearing
8. Secured tachometer
9. Secured speedometer
10. Replaced kick shaft seal
11. New battery
12. New ignition coil
13. New sparkplug wires
14. Upgrade clutch pushrod to one-piece design
15. New right cover gasket
16. New left cover gasket
17. Replaced a few grommets
18. Cleaned carbs, cleaned carbs and cleaned carbs.
19. New needle valves
20. New air filters
21. Replaced numerous fasteners with allen head screws
22. Replace oil sump filter
Should be ready for a first attempt at starting after I get in from bow hunting on Saturday. Keeping my fingers crossed.
