Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum and taking on a restoration of my 1974 TX650. I installed a PMA charging kit and am in the process of replacing the battery with a capacitor. I am taking out all the old wiring to do this. My question is do I need to keep any of the wires attached to the battery box? Do I need some other ignition parts besides the original points? All of the parts in question are in the attached picture. My other question is about rewiring. What type of harness should I get if I only plan to run lights. I am removing the electric start too. In the end I will have all of the original bike on the outside with new carbs, electrical, filters, and charging kit inside. Any help would be great.

Use the Tech menu and Google search.

Not trying to be a PITA but you need to be seen to help your self some if you want others to help you. Also reading information that is out there will also help you later on because other info in those threads may help with later problems. Book mark them.

I Googled your heading without the reference to the model and Googled "What type of harness should I get if I only plan to run lights".

There is a Member on here who makes up Harnesses. In the "Shops" section or he often advertises in the Garage. Member DADDYGCYCLES

If you are starting with a new STOCK HARNESS its plug and play but if you are going to make up your own harness you can get many diagrams on here to go by for what you are doing. Here is one close to what you are talking about.
I make up harnesses and harness kits for sale or if you have any questions when building yours you can contact me on here or at DADDYGCYCLES@YAHOO.COM

DaddyCycles,

That center drawing is great except for the 20 Amp fuse to the capacitor, which serves no purpose and could cause the regulator to go crazy if the fuse blows or just comes loose. The fuse needs to be in the wire from the regulator.

Not my drawing Pete.... Took it off the tech site and yes there is no use for that to be there.
Just a example but good heads up.

DaddyCycles,

I figured it wasn't yours, but if you know who's drawing it is, they should be asked to correct it because I see that drawing everywhere.

Sorry don't know who posted it but there are a lot posted like this and some are correct and others are not. Maybe get in contact with Travis maybe he knows who posted them and can update them all. I just use them as a example and give my email address if someone wants to talk to me direct so I can help.

mattgiblin, I would build my own harness. You can use a lot of the wire from your old harness. Just follow any diagram in the "Some Wiring Diagrams" thread, found in the XS650 TECH section, under Electrical.
In your pic the two large items with covers are the regulator, it has the green tube along the edge. The safety relay is the other. The square item up top is the rectifier. The item over to the right is the starter relay.
The reg and rec are part of the stock charging system. With a PMA you won't need these.
The safety relay and starter relay are part of the e-start. Going kick only you won't need them.
The fuse holder you can use but a more modern blade type fuse is a much better option.
