Most straight pipes have crap forced into the ends to quiet the excessive noise. This doesn't quiet very well, sounds bad and kills exhaust flow. A posting on another list made me think of a small muffler that was invented for equipment, like chainsaws. You may have seen it used on the end of a Mac-10!
The muffler is simply a series of washers with light springs separating them. The washers and the springs are captured in a tube so the washers move. I have no idea how this would sound but it sure is more science than craming stuff inside the pipe. Actually, I guess it is craming stuff in a pipe. :^p
