I want to remove the original seat on my 1981 650 Special and install a solo seat (Bobber style?). Anyone done this. All else on the bike I want to remain original and I want the two seats to be interchangeable very quickly. Asking too much am I??

Lets say Welcome to the Forum first.
Anything can be done with enough time and money.
Now in this situation I'd say it won't cost much, or take much time.
Does your seat tip sideways or lift off?
Most any solo seat can be adapted, get the seat you like. On a lift off seat you need the two prong part that fits into slots behind the tank. Mount them to the new seat.
Now you just need to figure out how to get it to stay there, I might try Velcro tape.
On a side swing seat you need a hinge that fits the front hinge mount on the frame, mount it to your new seat and again Velcro to hold it.
Maybe just use the Velcro to hold it, no hinges or two prong thing.

My seat pops off with the two prong set up in the front. So I can buy any solo seat and it can be modified to fit? Sounds way to simple. Thought it would be harder than that. Thanks!

It may be that simple or it may not. A lot depends on how secure you want it.
