i have searched to forum for info and looked through my service manual. this is what i have done so far: replaced regulator with one from napa, replaced rectifier with two from radio shack, un grounded the brushes. checked to brushes they are with in spec. checked alt with ohm meter like book said. went to check rotor with ohm meter, book said 5-7 ohms between slip rings( where the brushes ride on rotor). i checked this i have 1.2 ohms between slip rings. Do i need a new rotor? where is the best place to pick one of these up?

Sure sounds like a rotor but you should check the stator too. There are several options. Rebuilt makes a lot of sense, you send in your core get a rewound one in exchange. They will even loan you the removal tool, A good vendor is often mentioned on here. (I have not used them) You might wish to search PMA a bit more pricey but it gets you a more modern charging system.
