I've been working on getting to a "rideable" state on my build and I have the engine kicking over and running (though it races after it warms up... so I'm guessing air leaks are to be diagnosed...) and have to time the ignition.
When I first installed the advance unit the "pin" was upright. I...
I pulled the complete point's plate off and forgot to mark it. The motor is still on TDC of the compression stroke on the right side. Can I salvage this, or do I have to start from scratch. What sucks is I don't have a volt meter either. I've read the manual several times and can't quite get it...
I bought a 1980 XS a few years ago as a project bike. Within 1 week it was running like a scared deer. My only problem was that it would drain the battery. After doing only a very little research on the web I found that the XS650 was notorious for shorted rotors.
I then started to...
I am working on getting the timing dialed in on my 77 XS and I know that for other bikes I have had the manual will talk about setting the ignition plate at 8 degree or somehting to that effect. Is there a similar standard for setting the timing on the PAMCO? I am having a hard time getting it...
So I am so close to being done with this build. I got the bad boy fired up on Friday, and started trying to do the little adjustments on timing and carbs to get them all behaving nicely. Timing is correct, but I am getting a lot of backfiring. I am thinking carbs need to be richened?
I am...
Ok its Frank once again! After having my carbs cleaned and rebuilt and lubed up the cam rod this thing still does not want to start. When lubing the cam rod I paid close attention to how it came out and put it back in the same way with the little tab things pointing up. Before this thing would...
I installed the Pamco today and my bike idles really well right where the mark is in the attached photo I took with the timing light. Is that right? What am I supposed to get that line on the rotor lined up with or in between? I thought I was supposed to line up with the line to the right of the...
So I got my pamco/green monster all set up the other day, got it all timed but after trying to verify I did it right, I can't find any information on it  My bike had a TCI before the pamco and the timing marks on the alternator look like these:
When I first started the bike after...
I have a 1975 xs650b and am in the process of getting the timing right- Looking at the manual it says "the mark on the rotor_should line up with the stationary "f" timing mark". My question is; Which "F" mark? The one closest to the TOP DEAD CENTER mark or the one closest to the ADVANCED mark...
Does anyone have a set of step by step instructions for timing points ignitions? My Clymer book isn't very intuitive for someone who has never timed a bike before.
I did my best following the book, but it's not running right. May just need a small advancement or something simple, but I am...
I got the engine put all back together after a tear down and rebuild
i had it running for a while to heat it up to readjust everything (valves, head torque, timing and cam chain tensioner)
when rotating the engine adjusts the valves i noticed that i had not tightened the cam chain...
I just rebuilt my engine and now I am trying to time my valves and I have the camshaft set up like the picture in my manual and with the alignment mark facing up and the punch mark facing back and flush with the head and the intake valve doesn't open until 241 degrees, when it is supposed to...
I'm playing with my carbs and since I don't have a tachometer on the bike right now, I'm using my timing light to tell me the RPM. I'm assuming since xs650s have a wasted spark that I need to take the RPM it displays and divide them by two to get the proper engine speed?
