    Finally Got a Milling Machine

Yes folks, I had to announce that I have just found me an older but in decent shape Bridgeport mill. I'm very excited about this because it will open up opportunities to realize some projects I have been putting off for such a long time. One of the fellow board members has even volunteered to...

    A very -very- stuck piston

I've pulled some pretty bad engines apart, but this one was the worst. I shattered two hardwood drivers trying to get the piston loose, soaked it in solvent, derusting solution and penetrating oils and I tried every reasonable method to get it out. This is the next level. It's a custom...

New shop tool, this thing is awesome!

Hey guys, Just wandering some garage sales this morning, and came upon this awesome cutting saw. I had never seen anything like it and for $100 I couldn't pass it up! What is it you ask? It's a Peerless Machine company hack-saw! I believe it was built sometime in the 50's? A few...

Do overhead valve compression tools work with the xs650 heads?

I strongly prefer the overhead valve compression tools, the ones that clamp over the spring and compresses the spring below the cap/circlips, but I'm wondering if that works with the dual spring setup on the xs650 heads? Anyone have any experience with one that works on this engine?

Damaged 27mm Clutch basket nut, How do I fix this?

Picked up a 73 for a song, and the more I dig into it, the more issues I find. Go figure. The starter was not engaging and made the usual terrible whining sound so I take of the right side cover to make the bendix #4 gear clip adjustment. Now, as I'm in there, I found the previous owner must...

    Polishing Kit

Was curious if anyone had used the Eastwood Buffering Kit such as the one linked below. While the bike is in pieces, I figured I would try my hand at polishing the engine and figured a kit would be the best way to get started. Any feedback on this kit or any other kit in particular? Thanks...

    Manometer comparison

After 34 yrs I thought it was about time to sync the carbs. A friend had a mecury mano that had never been used, so we filled it up with the heavy metal and hooked it up. The tool was supposed to have restrictors in the lines but those were long gone so we tried it as is. It worked good and my...

    Dribbling carb screw: 90-degree screwdriver?

Guys, I discovered that one of my bowl screws on my single Mikuni VM36 is weeping a bit. The carb and gasket are both new as of last October, and the bowl has only been off about three times. I put a little petroleum jelly on the body side of the gasket (on the recommendation of someone here)...

    Accustrike Welding Helmet Review

After being temporarily blinded several times by welding flash using a HF auto-dark helmet, I had pretty much made up my mind to invest in a traditional setup and some good lenses. I was looking on some of the forums and found some talk about the Accustrike helmet and was somewhat interested...

    Bandsaw recommendations?

Does anyone have a good stationary bandsaw they would recommend? Looking in the $400-500 range, and looking to mostly cut tube either DOM frame tube or pipe for building my exhaust. Was looking at this unit, but out of my budget: I have a Grizzly portable handheld version that I like, but...

feeler gauge issue, and remembering gremlins from 10 years ago

Does it seem ODD that in a fairly big feeler gauge set, the thinnest feeler is too thick to use for the intake valves setting on an '80? The thinnest one was appropriate for the exhaust valves. Also NOW I know why I have this really small sized Yamaha parts stud in my parts box, still in...

    welding table

So I'm going to build a new welding table. This is going to be the mother of all tables. What do ya think 1\2" OR 3\8" plate for the top? I'm going to also mount my chop saw, drill press, vise and bench grinder to it so I want it quite stout.
