Thanks! On my engine, too, "447" is clearly visible on the upper crankcase (stamped vertically) but no other number is there...

From the factory the frame and engine numbers matched. If yours don't, then the engine has been changed. Not an unusual occurance, happens all the time. As long as it's a 447 engine just consider it an 80. No major differences in any of the 74 up engines. Mostly small stuff like the cam chain tensioner, engine breather box.
But there should be more than the 447. It can be hard to see down behind the front mount, especially if it's dirty in there.

My 72' frame has a sohrt vin due to beiing a new model back then. So if I graft the new title # on the frame shoild it go: xs650 2F1087xx ??

Anybody with a 78' that could check it out for me?

Could anyone tell me what this engine number stands for ?

a9b617fe.jpg

The head and the jugs have matching numbers at the front, but this one is stamped at the back.

psguy, I don't think it has a meaning outside the factory. The 8 looks cast in, then the other for digits are stamped in. I have one head here from an 82 engine. The number on the rear of the head is like that but on the front and verticle, it's 8 R26.
The numbers stamped into the head and rocker cover, and the number on the upper and lower cases are just for matching the parts.
They are cast then assembled together for the machining. Once machined they stamp the numbers to keep the matched parts together.
nelson20vt, your parts bike looks to be an 82 or later. Those lower side covers are kinda rare. Only fit the later models, won't fit the 79 frame. The seat, grab rail, and side covers won't fit either.
Most every ting else will.
If the 79 had the disc brake on the rear, just put eveything from the brake pedal back from the parts bike on the 79, swingarm and all.
The rear fender might be different, not sure on that. Side stand i think is different.
The 79 used BS38 carbs, the parts bike has BS34's. THe stock air boxes of the parts bike may or may not fit the 79 frame.
Engine, front end complete, wheels, center stand, tank, shocks fit.
On the wiring, unless you want to keep it stock, simplify it. Build your own, leave out all the unnessasary crap.

Thanks Leo for all the help, The 79 frame did come with the swingarm but i am not certain if it had drum or disk. The parts bike has a funky 2 toned colour I have not seen on any xs650 localy I will more than likely not use the tank or sidecovers or fender on the 79 as I am planning on doing a cafe and dont want to repaint these.

Here is some charted inormaton on VIN's and models and dates of mfg.

thanks for posting that diagram.

Im trying to find out what engine i have to move on for knowledge, parts, ect. to get on the road.
I purchased an XS motor and frame..
The frame and engine block read different from each other.
The previous owner told me the engine block is a 1969, and the frame is a 1972

Here are the specs
Frame # S650-133422
Engine # 4M4-001850

Would this be a 1980 engine as i read in the VIN chart above?

I could use some help, im a little confused!
Cheers

troyyork, It would be hard to have a 69 anything, the first year was a 70 model, The frame sticker may have a 69 build date. The build year is from August to July, as in August of 69 to July of 70. so anything built from Aug 69 to July 70 is a 70.
The frame number you list makes it a 72 frame, an XS2.
The engine number you list makes the engine an 81 XS650SH, thats the Special model.
If your 72 frame has the engine mounts then the 81 engine will bolt right in.
All year engines will bolt into any year frame as long as you use the right year mounts.
The 70 to 73 frames were set up one way, in 74 they made major frame changes. These changes included the mounts. 70-73 need 70-73 mounts, 74 up need 74 up mounts. 70-73 won't fit with 74 up frames and visa-versa.
On the frame look for 70-73 parts, on the engine in 74 they changed the internals from the 256 designation to the 447 designation. Most parts from 70-73 interchange, most parts from 74 up interchange.
There is some interchange from the 256 to 447 engines, but that falls into a more advanced catagory of engine building.
So most any 74 up part will work on your 81 engine.

Leo, i appreciate your help.
I now understand a little history behind these machines.

I have another question now regarding to the engine.. the 81 XS650SH, you said that was a special model, can you explain?

And is there anything different or special with the carb, or electrical ect. that i need to look out for?

Thanks.

All the models from 70 up to 77 are refered to as Standards. In 78 they started making a second model, they called these Specials. They produced a third model for a few years that they called a Special II, these bikes had features of the standards and specials. In 80 they stopped making the standards and Special II's.
The last few years they only made the Specials.
All the standards had low bars, flat seats that hinged open and 3.9 gallon tanks with a center gas cap hinged from the front.
The Specials had higher bars, stepped seats that lifted off, mag wheels, 16 inch rear and they relocated the top rear shock mount farther forward to give it a more Cruiser look. The gas tank was 2.9 gallons an ofset rear hinge gas cap.
The Special II had a stepped set that hinged open like the standards, Spoked wheels without the flanges, 16 inch rear And different trim pieces. Grab bars, plastic side covers.
The exhaust changed from the standards longer mufflers and seperate headpipes to shorter mufflers welded to the headpipes.
The Specials were just an appearance thing, mechanically no difference between the two.
