One of the major differences in the Special seats is the mounting of the brake light.
The early models that had the slight rise had the tail light mounted on the rear fender. These seats have the wide back end where 'Yamaha' would be printed for all behind you to see and these were side hinged.
The newer Specials had the tail light mounted on the grab rail with a license mount on the fender. These in my experience are the lift off type, high stepped with the thin rear where no logo would be seen if you could find the room to print it.
The newer rear fenders are ideal to mount the Lucas style repro tail light down where the license plate mount currently is.
Nowadays with the bitsa bikes it can be a crapshoot as to what is on any bike.......
Guilty!
I'll add that the transitional years can throw things off a bit.....
