Yes, this was on my '83, but it has a different center bolt on the top triple tree. It is flat topped and has a hole drilled and tapped into it. See post #79 in this thread .....
5twins, seems that a few years back you had the red dash panel brake warning light switched to become a low charging warning light on your 78E ?
That was a very low key but functional and very appealing mod.

Although the parts diagrams don't come right out and say so, I think that late flat topped bolt will fit your earlier model. They say the bolt was the same up through '81, and the only difference between the '81 bolt and the '82-'83 flat topped one would be the flat top and drilled and tapped hole. It was used on several other models so you might be able to scrounge one .....

The white indicator light was part of the RLU set-up. The RLU would trigger it if one of your headlight beams burned out. Since I removed my RLU, I wasn't using this white light for anything anymore. But, your '76 model doesn't have the RLU, it didn't come along until the '77 model. But anyway, here's how it's done .....
The RLU would send power to the white light in the dash if a beam failure occurred. Now, you splice that white light wire (light green) into the R/W wire running between the safety relay and the starter solenoid. This R/W wire only gets power when the safety relay isn't getting any charging voltage, so the light comes on then. Light goes out when the relay is tripped (opened) by charging voltage from the alternator, when charging is happening.

I can just tie into the old harness for that bulb under the seat.
So 5T, all I need to do is splice into this connection here in the first pic, with a wire that runs up to my old brake light bulb check connector, and that will power the bulb in my tach when no chargimg is occuring, hopefully only at idle RPM?
Well unfortunately, not quite. Your brake light checker bulb is wired differently than the white light in my dash. My white light has one wire grounded all the time and the RLU, then the R/W wire after the mod, feeds it power on it's other wire. Your brake light checker bulb is wired sort of the opposite. It gets power any time the key is on through one of it's wires. The other is the ground to complete the circuit but is only connected when the brake light checker connects it. So, splicing into that connector under your seat isn't going to light the bulb. You'll have two power feeds and no ground. What you would have to do is change the other wire up in the cluster from a power wire to a ground wire. Then it should work.
I use a multi colour LED from this place in the UK https://gammatronixltd.com/ and so far brilliant kit. I have a small bracket mounted to my gauge cluster bolts and the LED sits there. Green Orange and Red for charging problems. Sometimes I get a red flash with the headlight on and sitting too long at traffic lights. It is fused to the battery to give me a reading of exactly what's going into it as these old bikes can suffer from volt drop.
