How powerful is that 550 compared to our xs650?
4 pistons, each fires alone? I think I saw an example of a straight 4 where 2 outside pistons fire then 2 inside. That would essentially be like a two cylinder.

The XJ550 is definitely quicker than the XS650 with 17/34 sprockets. A water skiing buddy had one. Way back then, we used to race back to town from the lake. I could reel him in keeping WOT, but I needed lots of room to do it. XJ bikes had a good bit of technological advancement.
Also 10 years of improvements makes a big difference. However the XS2 has the classic feel when riding. Kinda like my Venture Royale 1200 compared to a Goldwing. Just felt more like a motorcycle.
The XS650 feels quick because it has the marvelous mid range punch. The roll-on is addictive. Many 400s and 550s are quicker when they are on "The boil". Few of us ride the XS650 because of how "fast" it is...
