Okay I'll admit this is my first bike and I didn't fully read the manual but I did buy one off of eBay for $12. Testing the starter with a direct 12 volts to the positive terminal, it did not engage. So thought I would remove the starter and this is the result... WTF
I DID NOT EXPECT THE STARTER TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE OIL SYSTEM. What am I missing here or do I have a major problem? Again I did not THOROUGHLY read the manual for this starter removal, but I did not expect oil all over my garage floor. It's like an oil change without the drainpan waiting. What a scramble. Just sharing because I'm laughing my ass off, being brand new to working on bikes, what a great journey 🙂

If it makes you feel any better, I do have the manuals, and I do know better, and yet I have done the same thing before! :laugh2: Yes the starter presses against a seal in the case, the splined shaft of the starter engages idler gears that reside inside a covered covered recess in the crankcase, and they run in motor oil. Here’s a bunch of photos,

Well, not to be a smart ass, but hangin' off the bottom of the sump should have been your first clue.
OK... yeah, I'm bein' a smart ass. :sneaky:
Oops... sorry.
Have a read here. More info on the starter than you'll ever need.
