Race bikes do not have link/balance pipes. Their systems are designed to optimize the peak of their torque band and power band. That being said I have followed bikes for decades and understand that an exhaust system on a stock bike needs to meet lots of different requirements. The system needs to pass the sound tests of the various marketplaces. The system after about 78 or 79 has to pass emissions tests. The system has to work in concert with carbueration to deliver a pleasing powerband. The system has to be easy (cheap) to manufacture. The system has look good. This last is subjective and driven by the marketer/sales force. In the later 70s many twins (and 3s and 4s) got balanced (?) systems. Assembly is easy, mounting clamps disappear and the system is robust. And these systems in our case now have 44 years of wear and tear on them and may be dented, rusted and just plain ugly. Also our emissions and noise requirements are relaxed due to the age of our motorcycles. So if you want a loud open pipe system or a quieter full muffler system you can tune/jet your carbs to run very well with or without a balance pipe.
