Front brake lever problem - or not?

I've just got a new pattern front brake lever for my '74 TX650A from a well-known specialist supplier, but the darn thing just won't fit properly. I had to slightly enlarge the hole in the lever to acomodate the lever fitting screw, but it just doesn't want to sit neatly in the lever so the thread in the bracket will take up the thread: forcing it could strip it all and require a new master cyclider. Other than a thus fruitless web search for an OEM lever, I'm unsure what to try: anybody had a similar experience with pattern parts, or have any suggestions for a supplier with good stuff?

Does the lever flop up and down? If so you can shim the lever to take up the slop.

Thanks, Leo: no, the clearance is fine...it's more that the fitting screw doesn't want to engage the threads - but it does so with the old lever. I can put up with a lever without a ball end until I work out the problem; it's just dissapointing to get something from an etablished dealer that needs tweaking before it'll function.

Jethro I had to buy a tap to tap out the hole for my depression screw to fit. I did not want to force it. I think it was real odd threads like .75. Works great now. Tony C
