Grab Bar Re-finishing?

Searched, but couldn't find anything. I would like to clean up the grab bar on my 1980 XS650SG. I'm pretty sure I can get it down to bare aluminum with lots of polishing and a big bucket of elbow grease. How do I get it so the black paint is only in the recesses after it's all cleaned up? Thanks!

After I got mine cleaned up and polished, I took some lacquer thinner and wiped it down real good where I wanted the paint... remove any traces of polish.
Then I sprayed the black. Wait until that tacks over then take a rag with thinner on it and wipe off the overspray.

If you turn brace the bar so the yamaha is flat just brush, slop, or spray enough black enamal into the recess so it can level out and set up, like Jim wipe off any oops with thinner then turn bar to do the next area. Same thing for the YAMAHA on the engine covers.
