Hi all:
Jim has kindly offered to post an amateur video of an odd new noise that my 1976 C-model began making last night after a spirited ride.
She starts and runs fine - but there is a rapping / knocking sound that I’m sure wasn’t there before. This morning I adjusted the timing chain and the valves (the RH exhaust was a bit loose - but not excessively). I then did a head re-torque, which went fine.
....but, the noise is still there.
EDIT on January 13/2022
Jim’s post of the clip has somehow disappeared so I am coming back to re-post the engine noise clips that were recorded in August 2018:
Long story short - this is the sound of a front timing chain guide that has lost the plastic chain slider. The chain is now slapping against the metal guide “shoe” making a nasty noise. What follows is the diagnosis and repair of the problem and a lengthy discussion of chain guides sourced from various providers including MikesXS and some used parts.
