Trying to figure out whats what!

Just recently picked up a 79 hardtailed. The PO didn't have it for long so couldn't really tell me what was done to it other than an upgraded charging system. I'll be posting pics as I go along..

can anybody ID?

looks identical to my PMA, which is TC bros. if its got timing issues you'll have to make marks with a dial indicator for TDC and degree wheel for advance, as I did.

my bike leans quite a bit on the kickstand. when leaned over and running is it possible for it to lean over so much that fuel will come out of the "overflow" on the carb?

If the float(s) fit loose enough on the pivot pin, and have less than optimum clearance to the sides of the bowl(s), it/they could hang by rubbing the side and not stop the fuel flow...

If that's the case, does that explain the 5 seconds of smoke I get during startup. Burning excess gas?

Maybe. Could also be from oil pooling to the side of the head, wicking down a valve guide seal. Could try parking more level, boost sidestand with a block of wood or such. If startup/smoke continues, then may rethink this...

Hard, worn, cracked valve seals are popular "smoke on start up" causers.
