My green faced 73 speedo is shot but the housing and chrome cover is in great shape. Are there any other year speedos that I could use the guts from that would fit my 73 unit? If so I'm in the market for one... Thx all, the knowledge here never ceases to amaze me:thumbsup:

Well Kingwj, not to brag but the 73 housing is an Extremely large model and not to be taken lightly:laugh: Pretty funny, the whole speedo thing. The face is good but the mechanical guts are suspect.

Jayal, Would a newer unit mean replacement of the mounting base as well? I've seen a few on ebay but theyre asking $80 plus.

this site http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/parts.html if you enter your year /model then find your part will list other models that use the same part, some of the later xs use dual cluster gages and different cups some different model like the SR500 used separate gages on a single base, now almost all Yamaha's of these years used the same drive unit so any speedo from these bikes (link below) will at least read right http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-341-25191-01-00.html gives you more options of speedos to look at anyway good luck with your search

Thx for the links, I'll checkthose out and see what I can do. I had an 80' SR 500 back in 82, I loved the bike but had a heck of a time learning how to start it. I wasnt into mechanics as much and never fiddled w/ the jetting. I sold it after a yr and got a nice kz650:thumbsup:

I have had a couple speedometer`s repaired for 50-80 dollars. If you have a speeometer repair outfit near you or maybe send it in to an out of state facility.
The last time I had one repaired was more then a decade ago so not certain what current prices would be.
It seems easier then hunting down , paying xs premiums then hoping it works out.
