Looks like I gotta split casings. I want to get ready and wondered if I could swap out my 70 transmission for a 1972 ?

Yes you can, buuuuuut, a little known fact is that 70 & 71 had a lower first gear than later models. This means you'll have to change the kick start gear as well as the transmission. 70-71 has a 26 tooth kick gear and you'll need a 25 tooth for a later transmission. They changed the shape of the gears in 78, but I think as long as you are changing both shafts it would still work. I have a '77 transmission in my XS-1B. Found out about the kick start gear the hard way!!!

Pulled engine this weekend. Going to put 72 transmission in my XS1. Going to split cases from bottom only and leave head intact. might as well strip frame and paint frame while I'm at it. Here goes nothing !
