OK I need help wiring this 650 up. Right now it's a nightmare. I'm not too good and understanding wiring schematics. I'm just not getting a spark at my plugs and have no clue why. I will post some pictures of what I'm dealing with. If anyone could maybe walk me through what I have to do I would appreciate it very much. 17102642280485185064284880148931.jpgthese are coming out of the motor along with these. I understand those are my pickup wires......but then there's this random yellow wire too......Oh and one more thing. Why is my motor only sucking through one side of the carbs?

1st off welcome.

2nd. Sure I have an idea.

3rd. You need context on what your trying to do, type of bike, chopper standard, any thing to help us help you, clear pics showing a bit more than a bad wiring join. The more information given the better the help.

Get a wiring diagram for the model and year if your bike. You need this, if you are serious about wiring you are going to have to learn to read a diagram.

What made bike do you have???

It helps with wiring to show a zoomed out view of where the wires are coming from.
the 3 white wires I think are one end of what goes from the Alternator Stator to the Rectifier. 1980 has an all in one Rectifier/Regulator? That might explain the yellow, red and green wires? Some of which are the Regulator.

But you don't need regulator/alternator/rectifier working to get spark, just a charged battery right? (I ran my bike for 10 minutes w/o my alternator even working before I discovered it was not charging)

Here’s a shot of the 80 diagram. Can you give us any history? I can’t tell from the pics but it looks like you’re possibly missing the connector plug. Is your bike stock?

So I got the frame first about 2 months ago. Then the guy said he still had the motor and all the parts with wire harness included. So I've been messing with this for over a week now. I'm about to swap all this and put it on my 1983 yamaha 550 Vision. Only if I can't get a spark.

Put together a bunch of electrical, and a carb, link, that need to b gone through to help work out the electrics on the XS650

For a complete novice and helpful to some that aren't. This also helps to understand a loom and how the current moves through it

I think this is a must to use in conjunction with a Wiring diagram that help to be able to relate the 2 and also to check for damage, (broken wires or corrosion),and fix/check the loom

Not only an ID thread, has a lot of information that may be usefull............link to manuals, (both service and parts), that are a must or go on ebay and look for a service manual

It's a 1980. And it is a real mess.

I see 4N4, the Yamaha Model code, this makes the bike an 81H, (Spoke wheel model), or SH, (Mag wheel model only year the US Model got a rear Drum brake on the Mag wheel), Very little difference in the looms or electrics, 81 model gets a clutch cut out switch.....................will help if a new loom i in the future.

Something else i noticed...........The black box, also has 4N4, (81), on it, (Factory Electric Ignition System), called a TCI, has been opened up. Indicates it may have been faulty and the PO has had a look.

Need to take pic of the left side of the engine with the small cover, (has Yamaha on it), taken off so it shows the charging system. This will help to identify the wires in this pic a well

Holy crap this stuff is amazing. Thank you so much.

I cropped the 81 Diagram into smaller sections to make following circuits a bit easier.

If you have editing programs it is some thing to think about doing to help relating a diagram to the bike.

Diagrams are in the tech menu under "electrical"
