I had great success using VHT wrinkle paint on my engine side covers.
Like the instructions said, I put on a thin coat for the paint to bond and then a thick coat in crosshatch directions. While waiting the directed 5 minutes between coats, I used a hair dryer to accelerate the wrinkling process.
After 12 hours, I put the covers in the barbeque at 200F (93C) for 20 min to bake the finish. It should be noted that this produces a strong odor and is not advisable to do in your oven, unless you are a bachelor....or want to be a bachelor
I am extremely impressed by the results. The only flaw is where I filled in the Yamaha lettering with JB Weld. The paint wrinkled differently on the JB Weld, so it kinda 'ghosted' the Yamaha lettering into the cover.
Check out the pics and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for looking!
