I've got a 78 xs650 special, didn't want mags so I got some rims from a salvage guy by me. The rear rim he had tagged xs500, no year on it. It fit great, only problem is There is a brake light switch built into the drum. I need to replace it but cant find one anywhere, Is this an xs500 rim or was it mislabled. Does anyone know where to get on? THanks

That's probably not a brake light switch but rather a shoe wear indicator. You don't need it or have to hook it up.

Besides, your '78 wiring harness won't have the wires to hook it to anyway. This was an early to mid-70s thing. Yamaha put it on several of their models. I have it on a '73 or '74 TX750 wheel I'm running. I simply removed the wire, cut the bracket off, and left the sensor plug in place. I wanted to remove the sensor but couldn't find a suitable bolt to replace it. It's a rather large fine thread.
