Don't think thats a problem. 110 bout the widest you want on a 2.50 if you care about handling, not many 110 x 18 rear tires...

I could go with a 120/90 X18 on the 2.5" ..if it wouldn't rub anywhere under extreme conditions assuming running good shocks in rear. Found one that matched rubber I ordered for front. probably should just use the 4.00 x 18 rubber I have and order the stock size alloy rim as I'm not liking the aesthetics of the original rear rim after running it through some evapo rust. have a 32 t sproket laying around.

110 x 18 is the closest metric equivalent to the original 4.00 x 18, and it's a very common size. There's lots of them around. My '78 came to me with a 120 out back. Once I used it up I switched to the more correct 110 and haven't used anything else since. I like it better than the 120. The bike rides just fine with it but steers a bit quicker and handles nicer (easier) compared to the 120.

I don't know what made Gary say that. 110 x 18's are one of the most common tires on the planet, lol.

I'm big on using wider rims even with that 4.00 tire
Many don't know a tire with an inch width is a 100 series profile.so a 4.00 x 18 is a 100/100/18
I have been happy running 3.00" rims front and rear on a 79 special with 110/80 front and 120/80 rear tires. I've got a 140/70 18 on now but it's not a good fit on the 3.00" rim, even a 130 starts getting pinched on a 3" rim. Doesn't help handling or wear if a fair amount of the tread is bent around so steeply it's never going to see the road.
5twins yeah there's lots of "OK" 110/90 18 tires but not much to be found in 80 or 70 series. I'm not as fast as I think I am, but still my choices are more towards the performance end. The first tire I ran back there was the same as the front that's been on there 10,000 miles with a few thousand more to go but it disappeared in a hurry in rear duty. I think it was toast in 2500 miles. Then I burned off a 130 70 Pirrelli, now the too wide shinko 140/70 Wish I could find a good Michelin to match the front.......... Not a fan of the Conti go's sorry GLJ.
Front Mich with over 10K on it.

The 140 shinko in the rear.

I don't think you'll fit anything bigger than a 120 x 18 in the stock swingarm though.
