carbs

hi folks, I just re-cleaned my '80's BS 34 carbs again after they'd gotten gummed up months ago. Replaced the float needles and the part they sit in, rubber caps over (under?) pilot jets and also float bowl gaskets. Put them back on today, and the bike doesn't want to start easily. Finally...

After rebuilding the carbs on my '72 xsb, the plugs are fouled with heavy ,black residue after only 25-30 miles. I can't figure out if its low spark or too rich/ lean. I don't want to start randomly replacing coils, voltage regulator, etc..Help!

So start up cold? A little better... after a while of riding right siide cylinder starts backfiring, totally off from left side. Weak exhaiust preassure. But will still run. (Happened half way on a 1.5 hr each way ride) I'm thinking cam chain? Throwing off timing? Once hot??? Ideas???

In your own opinions, is it dumb or a waste of money to buy a "jet kit"? They supposedly sell the jets I need based on my modifications and my elevation. Is it easier or cheaper to do it another way? I've never done it before so I could end up buying way more stuff than I need... Posted via Mobile
