ANLAF'S THIRD REBUILD DISASTER with VIDEO

There is one thing I'm not understanding on this "it leaks oil into the combustion chamber from the cam chain tunnel" idea. How does it leak oil into the chamber under the relatively low pressure differential during the intake stroke but does not leak out combustion gasses on compression/power stroke?

Simply put, if it leaks oil in why not gasses out(ie, a blown headgasket)?

Ken

I couldn't agree more....... These are high compression engines....oil intrusion could come on intake stroke or while engine off.....I'm not sure I'm drinking the cool-aide that this is fouling out your plug???
What were the results of leak-down test?

Three tests, nothing through the valves, but just to be sure, I papped, again, and then again.

Well the ThreeBond will come in a few days, I am recovering from surgery on the knee so out of heavy duty action. The sealnat is expensive enough, and the valve guides 25 Euros each with an additional guide removal tool. In that case I am prepared to try the sealant first. If there is still ingress it can only be (short of a micro hole in the cylinder head) the valve guides - then I will have to find that dosh!

Thanks for your thoughts, Rush2112, and sharing your ideas. Much appreciated.

Anlaf ....
At work we use Loctite Superflex Siliconeadhesive Sealant Wht Rtv. This is on large industrial internal combustion engines that drive generators.....Stuff works great! Best sealant i've used.....
Hylomar we used years ago on gaskets that we new we gonna come off....very light coat cuz peanut is right it will float around in engine but will never get hard....great stuff if used properly...

I definitely agree that putting sealant around the tunnel is a good idea....

Papped??? i'm from wv not gettn it?? LOL

On my recent build i was fouling left cylinder and was worried bout the oil also....found it was carb all the way..... idol circuit dumping fuel....was doing leak down, comp checks, valve adjustments.......ect....FYI
Good luck and great thread...

Rush2112 - 'papped' should read 'lapped' the valves again.

Yep, I've checked-out the Locktite range, and I want to avoid every hazard I can (floating/blocking silicon) so I will see how th eThreebond performs when it is delivered.

Rush2112 - fishing? I have never had the opportunity to take up fishing. I know the folk that go fishing talk about it all the time. Sounds like you enjoy it down by the local water.

Rush2112, I just checked out Harper's Ferry - beautiful country, and looks like there may be one or two sticklebacks in those rivers. Yep, I've heard of the place and the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, and all about that little dispute you had in 1861-1864 between the Greys and Blues. Very interesting.

That's sux it's so pricy 4oz bottle is less than $5 here

I just searched for Threebond 1104 NEO which is what I used and I can only find one supplier and thats in Australia ! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Threebond-1104-Neo-Liquid-Motorbike-Gasket-100gm-40c-150c-fuel-oil-resistant-/121108690853#page=page-1

$29 OZ dollars !:yikes::wtf: I can buy Gold, Frankincense and Myrr for less than that  I just put my Threebond in the safe

Heres the Euopean supplier website ...they have a big range of products http://www.threebond.co.uk/Products/PRODUCTS/ThreeBondSealants/LiquidGaskets/tabid/229/Default.aspx

My research so far shows they are all silicone anyway, Peanut and Carbon, even Yamabond.

Anlaf

sorry Anlaf I have been on holyday in Cornwall for a couple of days and WiFi connection has been infrequent.
Here is the Threebond that I use 1104 NEO
Its rubber based and liquid NOT silicon as you can see.:wink2:

Same logic applies to bad/worn rings and cylinder. There's periods of hi-pressure and periods of low-pressure. The oil either gets sucked in, or the blowby goes into the crankcase, to be vented out the crankcase breather. Doesn't take much for oil to get in there, even happens on worn rings in fresh cylinder, upside-down rings, fresh rings in worn cylinder, fresh rings not properly seated, ...etc.

Yes, an amazing phenomena. Kool-aid flavor-of-the-month: "Goofy Grape"...

I'll have a pint of the Goofy Grape - by the way I have a Dorman power brake valve on, too, so the breather is doing its job. Yep, all the received wisdom is pointing, firstly, to oil being sucked in to left cylinder from the cam chain channel, secondly, if it is not that it can only be the valve guides.

My money is on oil/cam chain channel/left cylinder combo.

I've seen many of engine in 30 years of wrenching burn lot's of oil and run fine.....
Can't remember last time I've seen an engine foul a plug in 20 seconds of running becuz oil is leaking past head gasket....[just to be clear on the exact flavor of cool-aide I'm talking bout].......Anlaf not high jacking thread just bouncing ideas of the board hear to keep people thinking and hopefully solve your problem.....

Normally in my opinion oil fouled plugs happens slowly couple days..... couple weeks...?
I could also be very wrong...??

Well for comparison, not a sealant but I bought VHT engine paint and it was $20 a can. Compared to about $8? In the States?

Yep, I also recall when I was trying to get pasti-dip for my diaphrams it was about $30 a can-not easily sourced either.Such is life and the world we live in.
