Finally got a bike after a few setbacks. What oil, plugs, etc?

Just got the battery acid added to the battery. Got 6 more plugs (total of 10 now). (Got a spot that has 19 more supposedly) but think i may be good until i switch the caps. Battery has to charge for so many hrs. I know it may be a bad idea. But ill probably attempt to fire it up tomorrow for the first time. The oil seems decent still thats in it. But probably aint. Idk. Just want to here it run before i start taking it apart. I was told to run a little 2 stroke gas through it to lube the top up a little quicker? Seem like a bad idea? Wish me luck.

If you haven't cleaned out the tank and (at minimum) dropped the float bowls and looked, then I wouldn't fire it up. If the carbs are dirty, all than junk is gonna get sucked up into all the jets and passageways, makin' for a right mess inside the carbs. That's just gonna make it that much harder to get 'em clean when you eventually do take 'em apart to clean 'em.
All runnin' 2stroke oil in the gas is gonna do is foul the plugs easier. It ain't gonna help lube the top end.

For any engine that’s been sitting for a long time, I add a couple of tablespoons of oil into the spark plug holes and turn the engine over a couple of times to lube up the bores / rings.

I forgot to mention the petcocks aint good on the tank it has with what my uncle told me and i do see a little rust in the tank. Ill be staring it off a "rust free metal tank" i have laying around for now. Thanks for the tip bosco. Ill go that route instead of 2 stroke as it sounds much better! Lol. Ill pull the carbs before i throw the breathers on tomorrow morning and attempt to clean them out the best i can. If i just throw the tank i have on. Will it have the pressure to "suck" the fuel it needs or should i set it up to be "gravity" fed?

:agree: I second the motion. Don't start it until the carburetor and fuel tank are clean.

Yes, just looking in the float bowls will tell the tale for you, tell you whether you need to go further and clean the carbs first.

If you are going to take off the fuel bowls you might as well pull the jets and make sure they are clear. And yes, your tank must be higher than the carbs.

Got one bowl off. He has a bolt stripped on the other. The one i got off is fairly clean. Do the carbs each need there own fuel line or is there a cross line that will do it?

Yes, if there's any dirt or gunk in the float bowl, the choke jet is easily plugged due to it's location off to the side at the bottom. Turn the choke on and it sucks that gunk right in. If the jet is plugged, the choke won't work and the bike will be very hard to start cold .....

Here's how to check it .....

The choke jet is pressed in place so can't be removed for cleaning. You'll need to blow cleaner through it with compressed air.

Neutral light on? Taillight? Try bumping the starter, see if the motor tries to spin it?

Normally, you get no clicking when just turning the key on. That would happen when you tried to use the starter if the battery is low or there are bad connections somewhere between it and the starter. Normally, just the neutral light comes on. If your instrument lights come on then the headlight on-off switch is probably turned on.

No matter if the starter won't crank, you can kick start it, or try to, lol.
