Just out of curiosity - Airplane Guys

I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England when I saw my first F-16. It flew in from Hill AFB Utah. It was 1979. Little did I know in 2 yrs I would be at Nellis AFB NV working Phased Docks on them. Later in the yr, I was on the flightline as a Crewchief on them. Our wing was the first combat wing with them.
the next year I was in Germany at Hahn AB. We were the first overseas combat wing of F-16's. 6 great years on them.
As late as 2013, I was watching them come and go out of Kunsan AFB. They were operating continuously. I went there weekly for a time.

1966/70 or so.
Lake St. Clare, north end. Mitchal's Bay.

We were on our 32 foot yacht fishing.
Roaring/screaming and soon 4 black contrails with 4 or more behind.

500' to 1000' and Hustled overhead.

B-58's!

cliff

wow!

We were aware of lots of circling planes around DEtroit.
Circling usually meant trouble. A few crashed in the lake.

Recalling the burn at Mather AFB when B52 came too close to the dirt... very nasty! Burned spam and all that.

It says the Boing sat there for 3 hours. I'm guessing the passengers didn't get to de-plane. Imagine, if you can (and I seriously doubt you can) just how pissed off I would be after sitting in that fucking plane for 3 hours. One of several reasons I will NEVER fly again.

Yet another remembrance,

I flew from LAX to LV to meet me mum, after training on FORTH language.

She dropped $$$ on slots. I dropped nothing on beer and a couple martini's.

She won $$$$$$$$ and rented a helicopter just for breakfast on the river in the canyon.

On the flight back to Detroit, in a heavy, I listened to the flight com on channel zero.

LV to wichita to cinci to dtw.

Final was 1000' ceiling . DTW control verbally instructed to this and that and final.

Broke through clouds and no runway, no lights! No clue exactly where we were.

Cap. shouted you fucking bitch, god damn....etc. @#% and and pulled up and right, HARD.

100 feet per sec. <1000 feet total. Holy shit.

After recovery, a new controller dude gave instructions where to go for safe zone.
New controller had 3 more behind us on the approach.

Damn that DC-10 has some power when needed!
It may have had 50 passengers, so a bit light.

"A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement that the Boeing 757 plane lost its nose wheel as it was preparing for takeoff just after 11 a.m. to head to Bogota, Colombia. All passengers were deplaned and bused back to the terminal, the spokesperson said."
From a article on the mishap. They probably didn't sit there to whole 3 hrs. I do kinda wonder why it took so long to get a tug out there and also why it didn't taxi back under it's own power.
If I was on the plane I would be glad the tire fell off before taking off not during the take off. If it came off during take off you were going to have to land without it.

You fellas would know about it, but don't the wheels get properly torqued and recorded together with the serial number of the wrench and the current calibration, and then safety wired? When I did nuclear stuff that's the way it was, sorta kinda...that and take pictures of everything...Polaroids in those days. Many signatures and reams of paper... More generally, and sadly, stuff happens for a reason...fatigue mostly, in the industrial fubars ah seen. Somebody is maybe not being good to the workers...? Just sayin'

You are assuming the cause was a people problem. People jumping to conclusions and splattering it on the internet before the facts come out are one of the reasons we have so much misinformation going around. "Just sayin".

@40north you like to say bad things about the state of my country and the world as a whole. Or at least allude to them. I find your posts entertaining and thought provocative. Gives me a different perspective to look at past events. The problem is you never offer facts. Just your take on things. Guess what because of the country we live in you can do that without any fear of repercussions.
If you lived in another country I'm not going to name and expressed negative thoughts on the "special Military operation" going on you could end up in prison even if what you posted was the honest to God truth.
Not to say the USA is or was in anyway perfect. Just my take on things.

"fatigue" is not specific... it works also in metals... and indeed I was asking for facts, ;) As to why we expect truth, well, that's yet another unwarranted assumption, eh? I see no "misinformation" in my post, nor assumption other than You Fellas would know, because you'all say you know about flyers, do you imagine I am lying? If so by what claim? Best!

and as you asked,
Flight 254 from phoenix to detroit md-80.
A year after 255 form det to phe did not flap down for take off(crashed on 94 and merriman)

254 taxi was 2 hours before v2
hot/stuffy but finally v2 up to 3000 and holding for 30 minutes, circling.

I looked on the port wing to see blood red oil pouring out and said like a curly 3 stooge, "hey, moe, we spung a leak"

Hydraulics failed and could not raise the flaps!

Circling to dump fuel.

So, relax guys, I survived. You all could do too.

Shit happens.

Never say die...:smoke:

"26 January 1972: Miss Vesna Vulović was a flight attendant aboard Jugoslavenski Aerotransport (JAT) Flight 367, en route from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Zagreb, Yugoslavia.

The airliner, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, YU-AHT, was nearly new. It had made its first flight the previous year and had a total 2,091 hours.
At 4:01 p.m., over Srbská Kamenice, Czechoslovakia, a bomb exploded in the airliner’s baggage compartment. As the airplane broke apart from the force of the explosion and decompression, 19 people fell from the disintegrating passenger cabin. Wreckage of the DC-9 was dispersed over several kilometers.

Miss Vulović was among those who fell. According to Guinness World Records, she fell 10,160 meters (33,333 feet), and though she was severely injured, she survived. The remainder of the passengers and crew were killed.

Miss Vulović was in a coma for 27 days, and never regained memory of the incident. She was paralyzed below her waist for several months and remained hospitalized for 1 year, 4 months.

In 1985, Guinness credited her with the “highest fall survived without a parachute.” The award was presented by Paul McCartney.

Miss Vulović was born in Belgrade, Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, 3 January 1950. She died there 23 December 2016 at the age of 66 years. She was buried at Novo groblje, a cemetery in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia."

….now this is a <IMO> factual account of the underlying causes of the recent Boeing 737 Max 9 door plug f@ck-up. I am so comforted to know that it wasn’t a f@ck-up by Boeing itself, but rather, this boo-boo was made by an entirely separate company: Spirit Aerospace.

What a relief.

The Boeing brand still takes a big hit for that. Nobody knows what Spirit Aerosystems is.
