Does anyone know, do the Standard and Special have the same rear axle?
I understand the Special wheel is wider compared to the Standard, but that does'nt imply that the axle is different. I have a 1980 Special with the last bit of axel broken off right where the cotter pin would go through the castle nut. Need to replace and I'm not sure if there is a difference or not.
Previous owner was kind enough to break it along with some other things, but the bike was free to me.:)

Then it would be longer b/c of the disc brake if Jay is correct, but I thought it just required a different swing arm and not necessarily a different axle length..

I thought it was just the wheel spacers that were different...

If the axle is longer, then the swingarm must be wider correct?

pretty sure the swing arm is wider at the rear, I tryed fitting a disk wheel in a drum swing arm and it wouldn't go, it's not much but there is a differance if it was the spacers that were differant it would still fit. Bit lost with the single disk question for the rear wheel.

Just laid down the 2 swing-arms together end to end and there is no difference in the width between the drum and disk swing arm

The axle is the same throughout production years.
The 70-72 axle is prefixed as 256, the following years as 341.
