So i was looking at the different cam chain tensioners and was wondering why they would use a plastic runner instead of and idler sprocket... then i see that they did use one before... so i am wondering what is better about the current set up for a 1983 xs650 vs the type b for a XS1b (1971), XS2 (1972) & TX650(1973)

seems to me that this setup would last a lot longer then the plastic one...

just a thought,

and would it work on a 83?

holy fack another samsquanchewan boy.

no, early cam chains are a different pitch and length. The plastic runners wear well.

After talking to a couple experts in the XS650 motor area, the general consensus is that the plastic tensioner has more of a dampening effect on the chain and they are also quieter.
My guess is that they were also considerably cheaper to make. They do wear rather well when adjusted properly, but I would think that the older idler gear style is a better design, but its debateable.
