I also posed these questions in my build thread, but I figured I'd give them their own thread, in case you're not interested in reading about my build :D

I've got my motor almost completely town down, but there's a few things I can't figure out how to remove... normally I wouldn't even remove these parts, but I'm planning on having my cases vapor honed, so they need to be completely stripped of parts.

First: This shaft under the clutch side cover is attached to a plate that appeared to only be held in with a single screw. I removed the screw, but no luck with the shaft/plate. I know you normally don't have to remove this part, but there's some metal trapped behind it (looks like a piece of chain or a piece of spring) that I need to get out... also, I'm planning on having my cases vapor honed, so I need them bare. You can catch a little edge of the back of the plate with a hammer and punch, but it's an awkward angle, and I figured I'd better ask around before whipping out the BFH.

This piece is to the left of the shaft in the previous photo. It has a slotted head, and a jam nut on the lower threaded portion. Also it had some of those folding tabs that Yamaha is fond of. I bend the tabs away and attempted to use my cordless impact on the jam nut, thinking I'd have to loosen it, then unscrew the shaft with the slotted head.

I'm not sure if that is the right procedure, that's just what I was guessing by looking at it. But when the jam nut didn't budge, I figured I'd better ask before trying harder.

And last, this is the bearing the shift fork shaft rested in. On the outside of the case, it looks like a freeze plug. Am i right in assuming I'll need to press the bearing out of the side of the case? Then I'll need to replace it with a new one?

Thanks in advance for your help. I wasn't able to find the answers, or clear enough pictures in my Haynes or Clymer manuals.

First thing involves the starter, haven't a clue.
2 - That's the eccentric post for the shifter centering spring. Loosen nut, unscrew and remove the eccentric and lock plate.
3 - Here's some threads on the shiftdrum needle bearing:

Those parts, i left them in place when i vapour blasted my engine cases. They won't be harmed. I asked the forum almost EXACTLY the question you did.

The bearing for the shift drum should be replaced after blasting though. There is no freeze plug, its all one part pressed in. You will need to track down an OEM replacement. User 'Peanut' has info on how it comes out on his engine rebuild thread. Check this thread.

Just clean the engine real well afterwards to be sure all media is gone.

Thanks 2M! Yeah, if it wasn't for the metal rattling around behind #1, I wouldn't remove it. Good to know on #2... that's what I figured, but when that jam nut wouldn't budge, I thought I shouldn't push my luck.

And thanks for the threads on #3... I'd have searched for it if I knew what it was called

Thanks for the info... I just bought a NOS bearing on ebay after I checked boats.net and they didn't have it. How did you clean your cases after blasting?

Put on your raincoat. Then get out the waterblaster. Then soak parts in hot as possible water to help loosen up any hidden remains. Then more water blaster. Perhaps there is a better way but thats what i did. When your cleaning put the parts on a large ply board or something similar, not directly on concrete. Don't want to scratch it up.

Vapour blasting shouldn't really embed the media since its suspended in a slurry, not like dry blasting. Still gotta clean it really carefully though.
