First project, got it running. What to do/replace now?

Last registered in 2004.

It's hard starting when cold, so my to-do list consists of

• oil change
• take a look @ filters, replace if needed
• carbs gone through and cleaned

I've read the Bike wont start?, Running rough? thread by inxs. My question is, because it is running and was running in '03 -- what would be your main concerns at this point? Feel free to add to the list!! Going to place an order this weekend and would like your opinions, a manual will also be in that order.

deffinately oil, carbs cleaned ... gaskets as needed. Also check the condition of the inside of the tank, fuel lines, anything fuel related. Plugs, points..... I think you get the point

Or you could change the oil, kick the tires and ride it.

what year is it?
Adjust cam chain, set valves run it for a while and then check compression.
See how the spark looks. If points do the gap, timing thing.
figure on pulling the carbs and cleaning. Use the carb overhaul guide in the tech section.
The thing is there are hardly any mysteries to an XS650 it's all just basic maintenance. Get it all done and you have a great ride and the pride in having done it yourself.
