That was Sunday morning in Vicksburg. I don’t know if the cemetery is Union or Confederate, but I expect it’s Union.

I did about 150 miles on the Arkansas side of the river. I had to quit stopping for pictures as I turned a three hour trip into nine and I had rain coming in from the west.
I’m happy with the bike. It performed well. I’m surprised how smoothly it runs.

Congress passed legislation to establish Vicksburg National Cemetery in 1866. The following year interments began at the cemetery, making it one of the first national cemeteries in America. More than 17,000 troops are buried in Vicksburg National Cemetery, the largest Union cemetery in the nation. Of these burials, the identity of almost 13,000 soldiers and sailors are unknown. The cemetery also protects the final resting place of a significant number of United States Colored Troops that served with distinction in the Civil War. Features of Vicksburg National Cemetery, including its perimeter wall, tree-lined roads, entrance gates, and the terraced landscape, reflect formal Victorian designs intended to honor the dead. This National Cemetery also contains the remains of veterans of the Mexican-American War, Spanish-American War, the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War. Vicksburg National Cemetery was closed to burials in 1961.

Terrific trip Marty, I’m happy you took the time to take so many photos, I got a real sense of what your part of the country is like, very nice! We know the bike did well, how about the rider?

Well, you're seeing what I want to share. I might have taken a different approach and made it look the worst in the world. But, the truth is, I have tried to project my attitude about my new home State of Mississippi. Three years ago, I knew very little about it.

The rider did great. Vicksburg is 220 miles from where I'm sitting. Yesterday, I turned that into over 365 miles and nine hours! Worst is the arthritis in my hands. I acquired one of those paddles for the throttle grip and I failed to locate it before leaving. As much as many of you hate the Special bars, I find they work very well for me when properly positioned, if not a little cramped. Leaning onto my hands is uncomfortable. I've taken steps to improve my health over the last two years and it's paying huge dividends, like this trip. I took the XS650 the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, including Skyline Drive, in 2010. After that trip, I said "NEVER AGAIN!" I may drop dead today, but I'm better than that right now. I can hardly wait to do this again!

Vicksburg has music venues, but I rode, ate, slept and repeated. My wife is ready to go back for another weekend, but that means the bike stays home. Yes, I am very much looking forward to our Ozark gathering.
I have curvy roads local. Unfortunately, they're riddled with blind elevation changes, farm equipment, broken pavement, loose dogs, loose livestock, high speed pickup trucks, and more hazards I can't currently pull up. However, I generally have NO TRAFFIC to contend with. That is the best part.

Cruised two Columbia River front parks. Downtown, Hwy too.
Friday traffic is heavy so I cut it short. Weather forecast isn't pretty, well see how this weekend goes

The saguaros are beginning to bloom , up on top of the arms, they’re our state flower.

If you’re wondering why I didn’t ride my XS2, which I just got back into service. I’m currently chasing an air leak,

A couple of hours blasting around the foothills was just what the doctor ordered, thanks for the push Marty! :)

Just noticed what I think is your float height gauge. Here’s what I did. I took a 6” steel rule, bent the pocket clip at about 45 degrees and it works great for setting float height. End of the rule rests on the carb base and the bent tab is long enough to reach over the float.

Yeah you’re right , my little paper float gauge, I drew that up a long time ago and it always seems to be laying around my work bench somewhere. I have a steel ruler just like yours that I’m using now. Great minds think alike! ;)

The photos of the flood gauge brought back memories as a small child listening to may dad and uncles talking about running the locks up river like they were not there during a flood. Then you added insult to injury with the picture of the tow boat. Man I miss the boats. When I was little my dad and camped on the nose of a sand barge going down the ditch in Louisiana. I was 4 but can still picture that tent on the barge. I also miss shooting at nutria from the bow of a work boat on the bayou out of Morgan City.

I am a son of a son of a sailor.

"Just Ridin" to work this week. It's a pleasant 9.2 mile highway cruise before 6:00 am that wakes a guy up (brrr) to the shop coffee.
The 79 is running the same and has required nothing yet. One of these days I'll check the timing.. Ya a guy has my timing light and doubtful I'll ever see that returned.
    Anyway cheers to Spring
