Welder's penetrate deeper!!
At 35mph.
On a rural road, cruising along, come over a hill, a truck passes by, as i go over the top, a suv is turning left into driveway. Driver stopped for a second, time slowed, "oh good, they see me". Guesse not. They go again, i jamb the brakes trying to keep the back from sliding, driver stopped just in time for my knee to bounce off the right fender area, none of the bike hit the suv, just my knee, but sliding tires, and bouncing of a suv, threw the balance off. Prolly hit the ground at twenty mph. Slide 20feet on chip seal. The bike on its side, in 4th gear still trying to idle. Gas streaming from cap. I turn the key to kill it.
I stand up to take inventory of injuries.
Stand up pretty good, glad i was at least wearing a hoody, the sleave on my left hand rubbed off a good layer of skin, not deep though, knee feels ok, i think I managed to catch the bike with my left foot, as damage to bike is surprisingly minimal. I think the bike bounced off my foot.
The shift lever wrapped back around the peg, front left turn signal shattered and bent, some more little scratches on the head light ring, tweaked the forks, bending the front fender a bit, the left rear turn signal bent back a little.
The driver gets out of the suv and asks if im ok. I say well, im upright and not on fire . She approches me saying she didn't see me, and that she and her husband both ride and are very aware of other bikes. I assure her shit happens, just glad im ok.
Since the shift lever is wrapped backwards and stuck in 4th, i have to force the bike thru compression to the shoulder. Just as i get to the side of the road, another car comes over the hill. I can see how easy and how fast it happened.
She is visually shaken, i dont get angry and assure her im ok, nothing's broken, just the bike. I ask her to take my hands in hers, and assure im ok. She calls down to her husband at the house, he comes up with a crescent wrench, i also need to assure him im ok, we straighten out the shifter enuf to get it into neutral and it starts on third kick. I ride a bit down the hill checking brakes, throttle action, turn around, as i go by them i give a thumbs up, and make my way home 5 miles away. No hiccups, bike ran fine as usual, get to garage , shut it down, turn off the petcocks.
My foot looks a bit swollen, but feels fine. The next morning it was very stiff. I have poor circulation in that foot, so it always looks a little swollen. I wear compression socks a few times a week.
My hand, i hit it with hydrogen peroxide a few times, my god, that hurts like hell. Those guys that get real road rash with rocks and dirt ground in must be in absolute hell.
Im very lucky, and very grad i was wearing a sleaved sweater. I almost didn't. My injuries are more like a rope burn, than a scrape. Very lucky. No damage to her car.
I have a extra set of original turn stalks, just need a yellow lens.. need to get original shift lever off ebay, unbolt the front end and check for bent tubes, bolt it back up, and ride on.
Its not a matter of "if". Its a matter of "when".
