Re-installing adjustable fork caps / nuts safely without cross-threading fine threads

Recently purchased a 1982 XS650 Heritage, been parked for several years, and am now catching up on much needed maintenance, has become a labor of love, and my new money pit. Need some good advice on replacing the adjustable type fork cap/nuts safely, fine threads are getting me nervous, fear of cross threading?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I can add that I normally push down, then turn the cap (actually a plug) counterclockwise until I feel it passing the start of the thread. Then I screw it in while pushing down.
