I have a 1979 xs and I am about to re-wire it could anyone tell me will a later combined rectifier regulator be compatable with the engine ?

In North America, the 70 to 79 years had 1 brush grounded. The 80 to 83 years needed to not have any brushes grounded. There is a combined rec/reg being sold that works with 1 brush being grounded. The later combined rec/reg will not normally work with 70 to 79 years, however, you can make it work by using nylon screws to unground the grounded brush (right inner brush), and then running a switched battery supply to that same brush.
Bike electrics in England may be different than NA.
You could do what I did on my bike. Buy a NOS automotive solid state regulator, and make up your own rectifier from 2 bridge rectifiers. Another option is to buy a single 3 phase rectifier...................they seem to be cheap on E-bay these days.
