I have done well reusing old FACTORY washers with new fat orings in the tank/petcock groove. I typically razorblade and sand all paint from the raised area of the tank. brush a bit of super glue on the new paint line to seal it.
^I've had mine off several times and I reused whatever washers were there, probably factory. The whole idea of rebuilding these petcocks -- I don't know...I guess it would come down to the quality of your diaphragm, how long does it take to develop holes or dry out and get thin/stiff/leaky. You can I think still buy replacement manual petcocks or rebuild the original into manual a couple different ways
After reading this thread, I rebuilt the vacuum petcock on my SG. The diaphragm was still good. All other rubber parts came from Partzilla with the exception of the little o-ring that goes on the diaphragm. It's Viton and you can find the info in the Great O-ring thread.
That was 4-5 yrs ago. Still work good with no leaks.
