New member and first timer just starting hard tail build on my '72. Have the engine out and am preparing to do top end. Have been reading many threads and can't seem to find an answer to my question. Do I need to be at TDC before I remove the head? Does the cam have to be in a specific position as well?

To remove the head, no you don't need to find TDC. Reassembling it, yes you need TDC.

I would replace the cam chain. The cam has timing marks.
The cam lines up it's marks at TDC. The cam chain then hooks around the cam sprocket. The chain has no marks.

It doesn't matter what position the engine is in for dis-assembly but you will want to loosen all the valve adjusters way up so no rockers are forcing any of the valves open. Loosen them all up so all the rockers have play.
