Thinking about downgrading to a VX800.

I have not had any problems with fork seals - have replaced several sets on different VX800's over time - except for the one time I used a non-OEM set and they leaked like a sieve. Switched back to OEM and no problems.

If anyone wants to get a more modern bike in addition to an XS, but still ride a twin, I would strongly recommend a 1993 onwards aircooled Ducati. Any of these, 600,750 or 900, SS or Monster will have a wonderful sound, strong midrange, modern brakes and suspension, low weight, and are really easy to work on. I do my own servicing, including cam belts and valve shims. Different, sure, but not difficult. My 1995 M600 has done over 50 000 miles without any major mechanical issues. After a little modding it weighs 400 lbs with a full tank, and close to 60 rwhp. Obviously a 750, 800, 900 or 1000 is faster...
