I purchased a nice xs750 tank and was happy to see that the cap that came with it was the same as on my xs650. Happy to use the same key etc.

Then... when I went to install it I find that it does not fit by about 1/2 inch. Everything on the tank looks the same to accept this cap, even the same bolt thridding but where the hinge connects to the tank is a half-inch north. When looking to purchase a 750 cap online they all appear to list 650 and 750 caps as the same. Has anyone had this issue and how did you sole it? I don’t know the exact year on the 750 tank. See pictures.

The 1976 XS650C gas cap fits a 1977 XS750 tank - but the XS650 Specials do use a different cap.

How did I end up with two “Special” caps? Oh well, that makes sense and I just ordered a classic cap for a ‘77. Thanks for confirming the issue.

Locks are pretty easy to re-key too, as long as the key you have physically will fit into the lock you want to change/use. There were a half dozen different styles (offsets and grooves) of key blanks used in these. If the key you have will go into the lock, you can change around (or mod) the sliding plates inside to match that key.

Yep, the knee dent xs750 will take the xs650 Standard caps but not the Specials. Not sure about the Special style xs750 and xs850 tanks, but then why would anybody use one of those.

I ordered a reproduction gas cap for my 77 standard, from a trusted EBay vendor ( a certain fellow from Germany)
And it is absolutely unusable crap! The metal is stamped out of extremely thin stock, the edges are all snaggly and the chrome is piss poor. It’s too ugly even to use as a paper weight. I’m EXTREMELY disappointed!

I’d put an advert up for those Special caps - there are tons of those bikes around and therehas a to be a few which need a fuel tank cap.
