It's time to start a winter Project. The Red Bike

I am sorry if I have driven this thread to "human stupidity" or "human incompetence "...
No need for apologies, I'm not a football fan and I'm a little bit of a sadist, therefore you are entertaining me. My mom always told me "Son, if you can't laugh at yourself, make fun of other people".

We're laughing with you , not at you:D
I don't have enough time left in my life to tell about my mishaps, but I'll give you a short one. 1980 Ford Fairmont Futura 2 door with damage on the RR qtr. just behind the door. Hmmmm,,, if we tack a piece of angle iron on there we can make a pull with the Cum-a-long and pull that dent right on out. So we tacked the piece on, no fire danger 'cuz we just zapped it real quick like... till smoke started wafting out. Did I mention that we DIDN'T remove the interior panel first? It looked like a Chinese fire drill as we had never worked on one before, trying to find where the screws were. In the end no harm no foul, just a little scorched insulation.

If we cataloged our
mishaps we would have a popular youtube channel.

I use grease and wax remover (cheap stuff is O.K.) followed with either a waterborne cleaner specific to the autobody trade or, believe it or not, Spray-Away non ammonia glass cleaner. Wax and grease remover is just that, it gets rid of wax, grease oil and such. The Spray-Away gets rid of body oil and everything else. This has been a tried and true method for me for years.
Same here, Rust-Oleum Grease and Wax Remover and 3M glass cleaner.

No babysitting today. I poured 6.5 oz fork oil and started to reassemble the forks. Pushing the spring, spacer and flat disc into the fork with the fork cap in a socket is a real PITA. Doing it and not crossthreading is a nitemare. I dropped my tube ~2 inches and tightened the lower clamp. The oppositeside remains tightly clamped. Now the fork cap is aligned/indexed by the upper fork clamp and crossthreading is much less likely.

As I've mentioned many times, you want a T-handled 3/8 drive socket holder/wrench for this .....

It allows you to push down and turn at the same time.

One "trick" on a big fine thread like this;; slowly turn the cap BACKWARD til you hear/feel it drop a smidge when the two thread starting ends pass each other. Grab a magic marker and reference that spot on cap n triple, then carefully reverse direction and try tightening. The thread should never present much resistance, if you are forcing it's not starting straight.
I fought this same issue on SoDak yesterday and the 70 doesn't allow what you've done, dropping a leg to start the nut, a good idea!
PS lube is your friend, smear some grease on the threads.

It went in real smoothly. The 1" spacer leaves a lot of preload on the spring so I really had to use a lot of force to get the cap down to where I could start threading it on. I like your indexing the threads ahead of time idea.

Working on the seat mounts I noticed the RLU still mounted. I will have to search the forum for the "jump this to this" thread.
