1978 xs650 Special Bobber 1st Build Thread

Okay, so last night i got my hardtail in and i picked up my gas tank this past weekend from the swap meet and i have my handlebars, wiring, seat, and pretty much everything to complete this bike now all i have to do is put the work into it. so last night i decided to get started. so im going to update this thread as things keep progressing but i figured i would give you all a startup and a few pictures of what i got it looking like and where ive gotten so far. any opinions and ideas are more than welcomed. please let me know what you think!!!

alright so its been a minute since ive done an update on here. so. so far i have chopped the rear end, welded the hardtail on, put the motor back in, and started mocking up a few things. wiring is next just got a batt from wally world last night and i expect to be able to make my own batt box and elec box. since im running kick only i dont need anything fancy like a start button or any of that. so yeah. heres some more pics of what ive got done. anyone like?

What are you going to do for foot controls?

We are actually fabbing them up ourselves. if you look at the last picture thats the plate. im in the process of grinding down the 1/4 inch plate steel for the rotating portion and then we have to weld the bracket together and run the threaded rod. we got all the stuff to make them, so i figure spend the 15$ to make them myself, and if i dont like em/ they dont work, ill order some. but i wanna try and build as much on my bike as i can without buying everything

I am all for fabbing it up on your own . So they are going to be forwards?

yup yup. theyre going to work like the TCbros ones. but theyre going to look kinda like throwing knives? hard to explain lol. with sharp points on each end and spike foot pegs and shift pegs. ill be sure to post some more pictures as soon as i get it all ground down, should look sweet, but who knows. i just know i want some damn forward controls lol

yeah i felt the same way when i was working on it lol. i still love that we carpeted the garage cause we only work on pre 80s bikes and they all leak oil haha. no, thats not a fire hazard at all right next to the map gas torches and propane heater. hahahaha

Alright. so i know this seemed to be about dead.... I was working on it with my very good friend Tim Maki back then and he passed away in a motorcycle accident. Since then it wasn't easy to get back working on it alone. But I want to get it done as a memorial to him. So heres some updated pictures. I have sanded and painted the tank, mounted the headlight. Got some UNIs for the carbs, forward controls, got my 21" front laced, and mounted, Gordon Scott Engineering pipes, and a handful of other odds and ends. I still need a bit of welding done, and some tuning. But I have faith.
