Another distraction. XS650G

I may be going to look at one here soon, same year and model, not for me but for a friend of a friend .....

It's been sitting a long time, since '95 according to the last inspection sticker. But this is what makes it so desirable .....

If it's not seized I'm going to recommend he get it. The owner is asking $1000 but hopefully he'll come down a bit. It's been listed for 10 weeks now so I think he will. This is on Facebook Marketplace. I never looked there much but may start. There's quite a few 650s on there in my area, some for several thousand dollars but most are more reasonable, much more in some cases, lol.

Maybe it's time for an update. I put this bike on the lift more weeks ago than I can remember. The fork fluid got changed and the steering bearings got cleaned up and regreased. I've done valve and cam chain adjustments. I've checked brushes. The kicker got greased..
Today, I drained oil and pulled the sump. The screen looks good. No debris, and no tears. The cover on the side has the gasket glued on. I sprayed it with paint stripper and have walked away.

Right side (clutch) or left side (alternator) cover? On the right side, I use no sealer, just oil the new gasket. I think that "puffs" it up a little bit, and I think that helps it seal better. It also makes it cling to the cover a little, and that makes installing it easier.

On the left cover, I do put sealer on one side of the gasket only, the cover side. I do this not so much for sealing but rather so that the gasket sticks to the cover and comes off with it whenever I remove it.

Yes. I do exactly as you do. The round gasket under the oil filter cover was glued on. Getting that off won't be too much fun.

If you're patient, the paint stripper will get it off. I replace those two little gaskets when I get one of these (or swap on a different cover) but rarely change them after that. They don't need to be changed, they seem to last darn near forever. I actually like the green Athena gaskets for those two. I think they're a bit thicker and last longer than O.E.M. ones, and you can't see the color people complain about on those two.

I found this bike has BPR7ES plugs installed. I measured the resistance of what I believe are the OEM caps and found them to be about 8.5 Kohms. I’ve hoarded some caps and chose NGK zero ohm replacements. This one will run resistor plugs. The difference in the caps is visually obvious, so I shouldn’t have a problem with a plug replacement error.

Checked 4 OEM caps from a parts stash that just came in, they were all around the 9K ohms.
Two were early single tower coils two were on a TCI dual tower coil.
I thought spec is 5K, wonder how that is?
Do they degrade with resistance going up or is the spec "pretty loose"

Just checked the factory manual. Surprise... they don't spec the cap. Surprised me anyway.

8 to 9K ohms is the normal value for stock plug caps, and if they go bad, it climbs from there. I know, that's an odd value, but it's what Yamaha chose to use on most all their bikes of that time.
I expect I may have tossed them. The rubber parts had decayed. I have enough NGK caps for now. This bike will run zero ohm caps with BPR7ES plugs.

Yes, changing out the original caps is one of the first things I do now. I did run some originals for a short while when I first got my 650 running. It still had points back then so eventually, I switched to the zero ohm NGK caps (LZFH) .....

Then a few years later, after installing a Pamco, I switched to NGK 5K ohm caps (LB05F) .....

I run them on my '83 as well (factory TCI and Honda MP08 coil) ......

I just noted an oil leak. I thought it was the rear drain going in, as it was loose. One or two of the dome nuts on the bottom of the engine is the culprit. I snugged them a little with the torque wrench and put down a clean towel. Fingers crossed.

My fuel tank has a liner in it. It appears thin and translucent red. Does that tell any of you what it is? I think I would prefer to let it ride.
