Day late on this, but:

I love February because it contains two of my favorite annual events Groundhog Day, and the State of the Union Address.

One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a notoriously unreliable mammal for prognostication with no basis in reality. The other involves a groundhog.

Today on the VFT site. Ain`t it the truth.

Yup! That was me, right down to the 5-speed stingray bike. Mine was green, my friend had a red one with the highly desired rams horn bars…..remember those? I used to mow yards in the neighborhood for pocket money, we would ride to the convenience store in my neighborhood and for 25 cents, I could buy a can of root beer and a comic book. We thought we were so cool!
It was a great time to be alive! 🥲

Mine looked much like this. Needless to say, I was an outsider. This bike was also faster than the 20 inch wheel banana seat bikes. It didn’t help me socially.

That was a better bike actually, by high school I moved up to a 10-speed. The high school I went to had so many kids they were running double sessions, two complete school sessions every day ( those poor teachers ) The bicycle paddock was huge, nearly as big as the parking lot and filled with hundreds of bikes. By the time my kids were in high school, they only had a single bike rack in front of the office…..and it was always empty. Unbelievable how things changed.

I had one very similar, black, twist grip 3 speed rear hub, UNTIL, recently related this to my elderly aunt.
Was probably 12-13 yr old, arranged to go down to the local lake and fish with a buddy, went home to get my gear, at the time lived in 3 story Garden Apartment complex with buildings arranged at opposing angles. Left the building front door holding rod across the bars and tackle box gripped in left hand with bar end.
SIdewalk made 90° turn to the left to go in front of the adjacent building view of which was obscured so I cut across the grass. I was having difficultly getting the handling of everything just right and was in process of adjusting my grip as I rejoined the sidewalk around the blind corner. and just as I was about to have it under control BANG!!!!!
Stopped dead, fell over, looked around with that WTF look and saw where a maintenance man was doing a refrigerator change out in one of the units and left one sitting in the middle of the sidewalk in front of the next building.
Bent the fork back to where the tire would contact the frame down tube. Ugh!
Ended up putting a 24" front wheel on and over time the bike got modded in other ways. Rear hub gave up so swapped it with the two speed rear hub from a 26" Schwinn Typhoon which gave me a coaster rear brake, put some medium high rise bars on it. It was unique to say the least and though not quick was pretty fast once I got it cranked up.

I had parents that made the more practical decision when I was six to buy me a bike that I could “grow” into. That tank would be a Huffy Cruiser with the big twin headlight tanks on the top spine. That on top of a single speed with a tall seat and I wasn’t even close to touching the ground yet. I had to learn to stand on a pedal to throw my leg over and jump off as I stopped. By today’s standards that would be child safety issues however I view it now as me having to get creative which I did. Figured out all on my own how to get on and off without injuring myself. I still have the seat from that bike on my shelf.

My late mother, b.1930 in Vancouver, B.C., had an uncle who owned a bicycle shop and gave her a brand new CCM for Christmas when she was about 10. My mom was very short and she said for quite a while she couldn't reach the pedals while seated. She learned to ride while standing and said she always had bruises on her back from the nose of the seat hitting her, Talk about having to "grow into" something!

I had my big sisters old bike... However, it had a headlight and dynamo fitted so when riding down hill I could lean forward and flick the dynamo on and say to myself, "I've got dynamic braking just like a diesel electric engine". Now that was cool...
Bet your sister was fed up replacing light bulbs.

Mine was a 70 sting ray.
Gold 3 speed stick shift hub,
sissy bar and banana seat.
I don't know what it was called, but was modded for trix.
Water filled tires, small seat round tires.

We used to walk it and others over VW bugs, ride sideways on big curbs and wheelies all day long.
Never to touch the ground.

Zero MPH and backwards was easy with jammed hub.

Early BMX I guess.

sissy bar was as tall as my head

We were kind of poor. My first new bike was a Candy Apple Red Huffy when I was 8. Most of the other kids had Stingrays and I was a little jealous. Good thing I outgrew jealousy.

Yeah, there were two rich kids on my block that had those beautiful Schwinns with the sissy bars and shifter. All us other kids were jealous but the rich kids didnt know how to ride em worth a damn so it made up for it.

We were all way too poor to have anything like them. Still wouldnt have traded my childhood for anything....great memories for sure.
