I am an aviation lover and I never knew the A12 even existed. Always assumed it was the SR71. Thank you for that bit of education today.
There was a whole family of 'em. The A-12 was funded by the CIA. I think they had about a dozen of 'em when they realized they couldn't afford 'em. The program continued with the Air Force funding the SR-71. That was a win win for the CIA... as they had a hand in what they surveilled. So they kept the capability with someone else footin' the bill. :whistle:
There was also a D-21 mothership that carried a mach 3 drone which carried out flights directly 'across' nations we wanted a good look at. :yikes:
There was also a YF-12 interceptor that was abandoned after war tech moved from high to low altitude.
NASA flew a YF-12 for years. When I was TDY to Edwards AFB back in the 70's I saw their YF-12 make several flights. That was always entertaining.
