Left engine side cover will fit a 81 xs

I am wondering if any year and model left engine side cover will fit my 81? Reason being is that I broke my original clutch cover and wanted to purchase a used one. It was stuck on my shift lever and tried everything possible to get it unstuck. It broke a small piece around the shift lever as you guys have probably seen other noobs do. and was wondering if i could just file it smooth and put it back on the engine? It doesnt seem to really do anything like support or brace the shift lever. Thanks

Yes any year should fit. Well, any from 74 up, the older ones might not.
Where the shift shaft come through the cover does give the shaft shaft support. I think you might bend the shaift shaft with out any support.
