my 75 xs650 has an oil leak (while running) coming from what I was told is a tensioner housing at the base of the jugs (rear) .. is that an O-ring or a cork style gasket? in a pinch, can I seal it up with some Permatex? Damned thing was leaking like a HD..... lol

'75 used an o-ring but it is a metric size. You may be able to find a normal inch size that will work. I know I did for the later one (dash #117). I hate paying $2 for one o-ring. Instead I got a 100 pack from McMaster-Carr for about $3.50.

There is a gasket between the housing and the jugs. The cap of the adjuster has an o-ring. You might try taking the cap to a parts store to see if they have one that fits.
You can make the gasket out of an old breakfast cereal box. Coat both sides with grease.
